The western honey bee, scientifically known as Apis mellifera, derives its name from Latin origins. The word "Apis" translates to "bee" while "mellifera" means "honey-bearing" or "honey-carrying".
This name aptly describes the species' ability to produce and store honey, a characteristic that has made it one of the most significant and widespread honey bee species in the world,
Its role in honey production and pollination underlines its essential contribution to ecosystems and agriculture worldwide.
The Western honey bee, armed with specially adapted hairs that form saddlebags on their hindlegs, are among the most efficient pollinators on Earth.
The coin portrays a coloured pair of worker bees, resting on the petals of a striking pink daisy flower with a yellow centre.
The background incorporates illustrations of honey bees, busily collecting nectar from sheets of honeycomb and blooming flowers.
As well as a ribbon scroll with the inscription 'HONEY BEE'. Also included is the coin's weight, purity, 2025 year-date, and The Perth Mint's 'P' Mintmark.
The coin is housed in a classes display case with a clear lid. Packaged within an illustrated shipper, each coin is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
Each coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 2oz of 99.9% pure silver, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
The Perth Mint will release no more than 2,000 of the 2025 Honey Bee Antiqued Coloured Coins.
The obverse depicts the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, and the monetary denomination.
The coin's obverse has been individually 'antiqued' to give it a unique finish conveying the surface abrasions of an ancient artefact. As a result of this treatment, the appearance of each coin in the mintage may vary.
