The Royal Australian Mint's Mini Money gold coin series will feature a selection of Australia's iconic native animals.

The second coin in this series will feature one of Australia's most recognisable and distinctive birds, the Kookaburra.

Kookaburras can be found throughout eastern Australia, from Queensland to South Australia, and have been widely introduced into Tasmania, Western Australia and New Zealand.

The Kookaburra is a large kingfisher bird, but unlike other kingfishers, the kookaburra rarely east fish. With an estimated population of 65 million, kookaburra's can be typically found in eucalyptus forest and woodlands throughout Australia as well as urban parks, gardens and backyards.

Often referred to as the 'laughing kookaburra' for it's distinctive vocal pattern, the kookaburra call is not as friendly as it may appear.

Their calls are actually warning other birds to keep away.

Researchers have found that family units will laugh in a similar manner and vocalize together to amplify their claim to their territory.

This intriguing bird is an icon of Australia, featuring in films, books and music such as the well-known song Kookaburra (sits on the old gumtree), which is sang by generations of Australian children.

The kookaburra features on the Royal Australian Mint's Mini Money series of gold coins depicting iconic native animals. 

This $5 coin contain a half gram of 99.9% pure gold, packaged in an attractive presentation capsule.

A limited mintage of just 5000 units will be released.

Each coins issued as legal tender and features Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on one side and on the reverse, a highly detailed design of a kookaburra perched on a textured branch.
