2018 Lest We Forget Armistice - A Century of Service War Memorial Medallion & Stamp Cover PNCFollowing World War I (WWI), memorials were built across Australia in response to the immense loss of life suffered. More than 60,000 men did not return from the battlefields, and the memorials symbolised their graves, giving families and friends a place at which to remember their loved ones.This cover shows Hobart Cenotaph, the first state memorial to be erected. It is a granite obelisk, with a pyramidal cap and a casket of solid zinc at ts base. When it was dedicated, in December 1925, the names of all 522 Tasmanians which died on active service in WWI were placed in the casket. Since that time, the names of other conflicts and peacekeeping efforts in which Australian have served have been inscribed on the memorials sides.
