The Perth Mint and Australia Post have released this stamp and coin cover commemorating the centenary of the Armistice in 1918.
Signed between France, Britain and Germany in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiegne north of Paris, the Armistice implemented a ceasefire at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
The Treaty of Versailles, which formally ended the war, was then signed on 28 June 1919.Issued as Australian legal tender, the uncirculated aluminium bronze coin is housed in a beautifully designed card with circular window revealing the con's reverse and obverse designs.
Featured on the coin's reverse is a dove, a bird which has for millennia represented peace, holding in its beak a poppy.
Poppies were the firs flowers to bloom in the devastated battlefields of Western Europe and soon became widely accepted as the symbol of remembrance. In the background is the word peace struck in different fonts, the inscription '1918 END of WORLD WAR I' and The Perth Mint's 'P' Mintmark.
The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2018 year-date and the monetary denomination are featured on the coins’ obverse.
Affixed to each envelope is an official Australia Post $1.00 stamp.
The stamp is postmarked for the first day of issue 2 October 2018 - Canberra ACT 2600 along with the Australia Post’s Seal of Authenticity.
