2017 Dragonflies Medallion & Stamp Cover PNCDragonflies are amazing insects - and not just for their intriguing appearance. This ancient group of fauna has successfully evolved to inhabit the plant some 300 million years after first appearing. There are around 6,000 known dragonfly species worldwide, with around 325 occurring in Australia.This medallion cover shows the Jewel Flutterer(Rhyothemis resplendens). which can be found near rivers, creeks and still waters from Cape York Peninsula south to around Mackay.It also occurs in New Guinea, the Moluccas and Bismark Archipelago. As its name suggests, it is a brilliant jewel-like species. Its two pairs of proportionately large wings are coloured with panels of spectacular metallic blue, with areas of deeper blue at the back edge. The wrinkled metallic surface of its wings scatters the light enhancing the dragonfly's visibility.
