2011 $1 Wildlife in Need – Orangutan 1oz Silver Proof CoinThe second release in this exciting new Wildlife in Need Series. Which is focusing on five rare and endangered wild animals, this beautiful series showcases these amazing creatures in need of our care.This coin program will raise a sum of $49,750 as charity funds for WWF-Australia.The 2nd release features the Orangutan. The Orangutan is characterised by its ape-like shape, shaggy red fur, long arms and grasping hands and feet. As its low reproductive rate and the long period taken to reach maturity, the Orangutans are highly vulnerable to environmental threats. Due to the commercial logging forest clearance for oil palm plantations and agriculture, potential risk of uncontrolled fires and human exploitation, the Orangutans has encountered the issue of the habitat destruction and the need for protection has been increasing. Currently this ‘man of the forest’ can only be found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra in south-east Asia.Each coin’s reverse features an adult Orangutan and baby in colour, against a forest backdrop. The lower reverse comprises a struck design showing a pair of supporting hands with a palm leaf motif. The inscription “WILDLIFE IN NEED – ORANGUTAN is also incorporated into the design.
