Released to commemorate the 150th Running of 'the race that stops a nation', a joint project between the Royal Australian Mint and the Victorian Racing Club.
Despite humble beginnings, this race has grown to become one of the biggest annual sporting events in Australia and one of the most prestigious horse races in the world.
The 1861 race had seventeen starters with a crowd of just 4000 spectators. Today it is broadcast worldwide to an audience of around 700 million.
The Melbourne Cup has become an integral part of Australia culture that it is almost impossible to imagine the country without it.
To commemorate this 150th Anniversary The Royal Australian Mint has also released a selectively gold-plated silver proof two coin set and a 50c cupro nickel uncirculated coin.
